Lot 2044
2044 Rouble 1742. Moscow, Red mint. 25.65 gm. Special eagle on reverse used on Ivan III Roubles. Bit 107 (R1), Petrunin 18 (R). Rare. About very fine. Estimate Value $1,000 - UP
After Elisabeth removed Ivan III from power, she withdrew his coinage and had it recoined in 1741, 1742 and 1743. The coin offered above displays an eagle from Ivan’s coinage, while it is clearly not overstruck. Bitkin does not offer an explanation for this variety, but it is our opinion that the eagle hub for the reverse die of Ivan Roubles was kept and reused under Elisabeth at the Moscow mint for a limited time.
